Penelope Panda – About the book
Penolpe Panda is a book
about a panda that lives in a small cage in the zoo. The book follows
her many attempts to escape, and the animals he meets on her journey.
Each page is designed with both text and pictures.
I wanted to create a book which can be read to a child, and be read by
the child while it is learning to read. All of the illustrations and
story was created by myself.
The story comes from when animals at the zoo were stuck in small
concreted floored cages, with not much room to move or any greenery to
feel at home with. Basically they were just there for the public to
see. The story relates to how zoos have been transformed. Instead of
the old zoo cages, individual animals now have their own space simular
to what they were used to in the wild. The animals of zoo can now feel
at home, and the public can see them in their natural environment.
I am really pleased how the book has turned out. As a child I loved
writing short stories. Being a creative person, my inspiration came
from unusual places. Unfortunately I didn't keep these short stories,
except one story, which was published in the New Zealand children's
magazine Allsorts. All the Illustrations were draw on the computer in
Freehand, with reference of Panda photos from the Internet. These
helped me get the different Panda poses right.
This book hasn't been published. If you would like to order a copy, I
can make one up myself (as were taught about book binding in the
Diploma of Computer Graphic Design.) Or you can order one from
