The Importance of
Graphic Design and it's Involvement in our Lives
Today I am going to talk about the importance of graphic design and how
it is involved so much in our daily live. I am going to especially talk
about logo designs. I was inspired by a Blog page
33
Logos in 30 Minutes .
Many of us do not
realise how much graphic design is involved in our daily routines. A
lot of logos are found at the supermarket and clothing store.
Teenagers like to buy brand name clothing like
Quicksilver or Ripcurl, judging the clothing by the brand name, which
is represented by a unique logo. They then choose a clothing item based
on the designs on the front.
At the supermarket, with some things admittedly we
buy the cheap brands with hardly any design on them. But mostly we
choose our shopping items, according to the logo featured on the item,
or design. For example, we are more likely to choose the Arnott's
Royal's than say a no brand Marshmallow Puff. This is because we know
that Arnott's makes good quality biscuits, and because of the better
design on the front. And we remember the product by it's logo. Other
times we go for things, which have an interesting design, and colour
scheme on the item. Children choose items which have an interesting
designs, picture, colours and cartoons on the front. Cereal boxes and
muesli bars are a good example of this, as there are a wide variety of
these items, and the designs on the front are commonly aimed at kids.
We remember a good Cafe by its logo. We also judge
cafes based on their logo. For example, Cafe logos with script writing
makes the Cafe look expensive and upmarket. A logo with lots of design
and alignment of elements, makes a Cafe look professional, maybe a but
more expensive than a family owned Cafe. But with the design of the
logo, you come to expect quality food and unique dishes. Often a simple
logo with not much to, it gives a person the feeling that the Cafe is
personally owned. It gives the Cafe an affordable look. We imagine that
it is very cosy inside with plenty of homemade food. Starbucks is well
known as a popular Cafe, and its logo represents it well. The Starbucks
logo is very semi formal. The two stars are perfectly aligned, the
circles are centred with different elements to them, and then there is
the detailed design in the middle. People can tell by it's logo that
the prices are a little bit more, but the fact that Starbucks combines
graphic design on their cups and a variety of different drinks, makes
them so popular. These rules apply to both Cafe's and Restaurants. I
would like to display some examples of these, but do not know if I am
allowed to without permission.
A good example of how great graphic design brings in
more customers, are to pizza restaurant in Melbourne city (Melbourne,
Australia.) One of these pizza restaurants I notice is always busy, and
the other never seems to get many customers. The difference, the
Graphic Design they use. The busy restaurant has a formal and modern
logo, which is carried on with the aprons the staff wear. The other
pizza shop has a casual simple logo. Which you could say, anyone could
design. With a pizza restaurant, people choose where they want to eat
based on quality design. They want to know that their pizza will taste

The Savvy Designer's Guide to
Success: Ideas and Tactics for a Killer Career by Jeff Fisher
This is a great book for
anyone in Graphic Design, or someone wanting to get into the industry.
I am currently reading it, and find it very helpful for my freelance
Graphic Design business. Here is what Amazon has to say about Jeff
Fishers book:
Now every designer can reap the benefits
of having
the perfect mentor. In this career guide, Jeff Fisher shows off his
winning personality with ideas and solutions to nearly every career
dilemma, including: - Building a recognisable and reputable firm -
Presenting a professional image all the time - Mastering client
communication - Learning from (and salvaging) mistakes - Determining
fees for work - Finding happiness along with financial success Here,
designers won't find any of the dry, stuffed shirt attitude that's
doled out with most business advice. Instead, they'll enjoy a fun mix
of personal anecdotes and industry research to help them take their
careers to the next level. This is a must-have resource for all
creative professionals.

My Children's Book –
Penelope Panda
I am selling my
children's book Penelope Panda on a public publishing website called
Lulu. If you would like to preview Penelope Panda, contact me, and I
will send you a preview copy of the whole book at no cost as a pdf. If
preferred, I can get it professionally bound as a hard back or paper
back, and mail it to you.
Penelope
Panda is about a Panda who
does not like living at the Zoo, because of the living conditions.
After trying different ways to escape from her enclosure, the Zoo
decides to relocate her to a new and better location. Penelope Panda
was written for children from the ages of one to six years old. For one
to four year olds parents would read to their children. For four to six
year olds it would be a book that would teach them how to read.
Penelope Panda is an easy book to read with only a few words on each
page, and illustrations which add colour and interest to the story.

Blending Images in Photoshop
Today I am going to show my readers some
different blending techniques in Photoshop. For copyright reasons, I
have been given permission to all of the images in this blog.
This picture consists or two layers: the
moon and the picture of the cat, with the cat as
Layer 2.
Here's how I created this blending effect in Photoshop. First I
selected the background of the moon and deleted the selected area from
the cat layer. With the cat's face I changed the
layer effect from
Normal to
Luminosity, this
changes the colours in the layer to match the grey and whites of the
moon. A different
layer effect
which can be used in a picture like this is
Overlay. This
layer effect blends
the top layer into the one below the same way that
Luminosity does,
except it keeps the original colours of the layer being used.
I
hope that that isn't too confusing. Then I changed the
Opacity to 44% so
that the cat looks like it is part of the moon.
With this picture I wanted to make the eye a part of Ayers Rock or
Uluru but make it stand out. First with the eye layer (
Layer 2) I used the
Eraser Tool set on
Basic Brushes with
the
Hardness
at 0% and the
Master
Diameter to around 40%. Using the
Eraser Tool I erased
around the eye within the rock blending the eye into the rock. Next I
set the eyes
Layer
Effect to
Linear Light.
With this picture I blended the two photos with the
Feather.
With each individual image layer I did the following. First I selected
the background of the layer. Then I went Select >
Modify >
Feather, I set
Feather
to 30, this can be played around.
Then
I deleted the selected area. Once both images were feathered, I moved
them around until they blended into one another. Blending with a
feather looks the best when both images have similar colours.

Fixing my
Error log for KimberleyCreative.com
For a while I have had two errors
showing up in my Error Log for my
website
File does not exist: /home/kimb/public_html/robots.txt
File does not exist: /home/kimb/public_html/favicon.ico
I want to share this with everyone who
is reading my blog, as these two
items are very important to websites.
A robots.txt file provides restrictions
to search engine robots (known as "bots") that crawl the web. These
bots are automated, and before they access pages of a site, they check
to see if a robots.txt file exists that prevents them from accessing
certain pages. This is a great
website where anyone can create a robots.txt:
Create
a robots.txt!/
Favicon (pronounced fav-eye-con) is
short for 'Favourites Icon.' A Favicon is a multi-resolution image
which
is displayed on the Address line and in the Favourites menu. The
Favicon
allows the Webmaster to further promote their site, and to create a
more customized appearance within a visitor's browser. This is a great
website where anyone can create a favicon.ico:
Create a favicon.ico!/
Another good file to have is a sitemap.
A sitemap is a basic html file of all the pages in your website.
Sitemaps are especially got for large business websites, as these
website hold a lot of information. For example, I was having a look at
my Super website today, I needed to find their contact information, but
couldn't find it. I clicked on their sitemap which they had displayed
on their homepage, and found their 'Contact' page. This is a good
website to create a sitemap:
Create
a sitemap!
Last, but not least. If you have a
website, or are
thinking of creating a website, the Google Webmasters Tools is a great
thing to sign up. For more information and to sign up to Google
Webmasters Tool see:

Some Photoshop Websites
Being a Graphic Designer, I am very familiar with
Photoshop. I enjoy
using it, and learning about the endless effects you can create using
Photoshop with filters.
My favourite Photoshop Forum is
Devppl.com
You can find myself and lots
of other people on Devppl helping people solve their Photoshop
problems. If you stuck in Photoshop, this is the forum to go to!
Photoshop forums are also a good source
of advertisement for people like Graphic Designers and Website
Designer. After every posting I add my signature. Displaying my
signature with my website address invites people to check out my
freelance Graphic Design business website.
Another website I would like to
recommend is
Worth1000.com
This website
has beginner to advanced Photoshop contests which anyone who joins can
enter. For the beginner competitions Worth1000 provides a photo, which
you have to Photoshop. For the advanced competitions, competitors are
asked to create a picture with a specified technique, e.g. one
competition asked competitors to create a picture with fire as the main
technique. Worth1000 also had a wide range competition pictures in the
gallery which you can view. These pictures are amazing, and a must see
for any Photoshopper.

Internet
Explorer problem solved
Got back from my holiday in QLD with my
boyfriend yesterday. At his house I checked my website stats on his
Windows PC for the three week I have been away. Wasn't very happy when
I found my website display all over the place: pictures on pictures,
and the text wasn't centred.
Why is it
doing this? Has my website put off potential clients? I have a Apple
Macintosh computer, (the best computer for Graphic Designers.) I tested
my website on my Mac, worked fine. Couldn't try it out on my brothers
PC, cause the stupid thing decided to not connect to the airport.
(Probably got beaten by having two Macs in the house, and everything
else Apple related.) My website worked fine on my Mac, stupidly I
didn't check it on my boyfriends PC at least.
KimberleyCreative.com is working fine now though, just
sacrificed my
work all morning to fix the problem. Tested it in FireFox and Safari on
my Mac, and Explorer and FireFox on the Windows PC. Before it worked
well on everything but Explorer. Lucky for me, according to my web
stats only about 5% of visitors use Explorer, so I feel better about
that. Explorer beware!
